Mysteries of the Big Salty Lake is a collection of images that I shot on location at the Great Salt Lake in Utah over the past four years and is accompanied in the preview linked above and below by the haunting music of the Mystic Rhythms Band.
One of the most amazing wonders of the natural world, the Great Salt Lake is a remnant of Lake Bonneville, an ancient inland sea from the Great Ice Age that once covered most of the state of Utah and parts of Idaho and Nevada. About 17,000 years ago an earthen rupture at the north end of the lake drained most of its waters leaving behind a much smaller lake that had no exit and that became increasingly salty as the millenniums rolled by.
This cataclysmic change in the climate brought about heavy evaporation which resulted in a vast sprawling desert where the lake had once been and a persistently harsh terrain that at first glance seems barren and lifeless. As most of the people I've worked with there will tell you though, there's a lot of life and a lot of magic in and around the Great Salt Lake. Wandering out naked and unprotected into her waters allows for an intimacy that is both compelling and challenging; a chance to reconnect with Mother Earth in a way that few other places on earth offer.
