I've shared this image before here but in preparation for my new book Storytime I'm rescanning and reworking some of the pictures. The original silver prints that I did in the darkroom are beautiful but lose a lot of integrity in the scanning. Going back and scanning from the original negative makes a world of difference in terms of how the images render in printed form. Below is the image as it was scanned from my darkroom print.

What scanner would you recommend for negatives? Wonderful work

I use a high end Epson for both negs and transparencies. I think it's important to get the best scanner you can afford because scanning makes a world of difference when going from film to digital.

This photo appears to have more value and is much richer than the image scanned from your darkroom print. Yes, it does pay off to work at it, doesn't it. You make your work appear effortless, but I appreciate the fact that you are open and willing to share a little about 'how' you go about creating what you do and that it all just doesn't fall from the sky. A lot of TLC goes into it on your part.

HaHa! First off my intitals are TLC, so when you say a lot of TLC goes into my work you are absolutely right!

There is definitely no falling from the sky with regards to the work that many of us photographer/artists do. It's a combination of skill, artistic instinct and lots of work that allows it to all unfold. And by rights, you should see the final image as effortless so that you're free to absorb and enjoy it without thinking too much about the backstory. I share some of the stuff that goes on behind the scenes here on dA because it's a forum presumably by artists for artists and I think a peek behind the curtains once in awhile is both fun and helpful.
