I grew up in Rome and have been living there on and off ever since. Rome is as much home as anywhere else on earth even though I've chosen to live in the US for now where I can be close to my daughter and grandkids. It's likely I'll end up going back for a couple of years with the hopes of doing a series of nudes there that I can compile into a book.
This picture was taken on my 50th birthday in Rome looking out across the Tiber River from Ponte Umberto towards the Vatican. I went back for that momentous birthday because I wanted to celebrate with my childhood friends, most of whom still live there. Working from an abysmally primitive digital camera I had always felt the images from that day were nothing I'd want to share publicly. So recently I experimented with taking them into photoshop and giving them a makeover. They're small files but I got what I was after and am happy to begin sharing them.
Ahhh yes! I've always wanted to go to Rome. For me, it would be like experiencing my roots, for my mother was raised in Italy. Shortly after WWII she married and American soldier, one of those famous men of the 442nd which were made up of Japanese American soldiers. She promised to one day take me to her homeland for me to see, but she passed before that ever manifested. Perhaps one day I will, but in the mean time I see it though work such as yours here, and I appreciate doing so as you can imagine. I feel as though I am actually there viewing this and that I had finally made it back to part of my roots.
You must make the pilgrimage to Italy. It will change everything in your consciousness about your life and the world around you. I'm intrigued by your parentage and would love to hear more about that story.
Thanks! The original was so flat and of marginal quality that I just ignored it. But the view from that bridge is so beautiful and magical that I felt it was worth revisiting the image to see if it could be improved. I'm learning more and more how to use digital to get where I want to be. It's a process.
Yes, I agree with others that this has the look and feel of a painting rather than a photo. I think too, the sky and cloud formations were very cooperative that day. Beautiful!
