Description
The very first nude shoot that I did way back when was on Black's Beach in La Jolla, California. This image of Kevin rolling around in the sand is from that shoot and has remained in my collection all these years not only because it's sentimental but because it holds its own against every other nude I've ever done.
It was shot on Kodachrome with a Nikkor 105 1.8 and printed on Cibachrome. I scanned it from that original print. The image is completely unmanipulated - no levels, no color adjustments no nothing. Kodachrome was of such exceptional richness and clarity that I have rarely if ever felt that I could do anything to improve upon what the film recorded.
I went to California's most famous nude beach that day with a few of the local Laguna boys to take pictures of them but had no intention of getting naked myself. Five minutes after I hit the sand my clothes were gone and I spent the rest of the day doing my very first nude shoot naked. The red book of matches in the foreground was from the Boom Boom Room, Laguna's infamous gay club. I had no idea the matches were there until I did the Ciba print. As it happened the lot of us Shnappered and sunburned guys ended up there later that evening and kept the party going.

tom i cannot say in words how much i love this photo. it is just breathtaking! when i look at it i get this feeling running down my throath invading my stomach and the rest of the body. the upper line of the body is just sublime, i could make 295 drawings of it and still not get enough.
the relaxed fragile body against that massive, tortured, heavy, intimidating car. the small red card which adds so much to the cromatic balance. the sand-covered areas. the skin..i can almost smell it.
AND being on film- respect!
